20 Hour Basic Mediation Skills
This course will provide a forum for the students to be exposed to the basic mediation skills for becoming a VA certified mediator. This will encompass covering conflict, a variety of ADR techniques to resolve conflict, with an emphasis on the history and theory of mediation and interest based conflict resolution and basic communications skills and techniques as well as the role of others in the process. Each phase of mediation will be explored and practiced to gain more insight to the basic process and principles. The students will explore the ethics of being a certified mediator and will be introduced to agreement writing and the differences between legal advice and legal information. The class will also allow the students to role-play and observe certified mediator(s) conduct and model various mediation techniques to resolve conflict.
